Alfred tossed the bomb away and it exploded, not killing him but critically wounding him, and he was rushed to the hospital while Bruce ramped up his efforts to find the man who nearly killed his adoptive father.Īlfred entered a coma while in the hospital, and after the explosion, the Riddler leaked the truth of Thomas' partnership with Falcone and Martha's history of mental illness to the public, and revealing the truth to Bruce. One night, Alfred was looking through Bruce's mail and discovered a packaged bomb and a fireproof package with a riddle for the Batman, both from the Riddler. Alfred continued to get more concerned as Batman continued his investigation with Gordon. When the Riddler killed Commissioner Savage and District Attorney Colson and left the Batman more riddles and ciphers, he revealed more secrets of Falcone's corruption to the city, even amassing a social media following of Gotham's less fortunate citizens, tired of being lied to by those in power. In hopes of protecting Bruce, Alfred helped Bruce solve the cipher contained inside, helping him uncover secrets about Carmine Falcone's web of corruption in the city, which the Riddler was aiming to uncover to the public through his murder spree. When Alfred discovered this, he became very nervous for Bruce's welfare, remembering how he'd failed to protect his parents, but Bruce told him not to worry, reminding him that they weren't related by blood. On Halloween night, Mayor Mitchell was murdered by a serial killer known as the Riddler, and his body was left with a envelope addressed to the Batman. The Riddler Investigationīy 2021, Wayne Enterprises began to collapse financially with Bruce's lack of control, and Alfred was left as the only one to care enough to pick up the pieces. Over the first two years of the Batman's career, despite Bruce becoming more abrasive with him, Alfred helped him go up against ruthless gangsters like Falcone and the Penguin on numerous occasions, and teaming up with the police officer who would become his only friend, Jim Gordon. Alfred disapproved of his operations, feeling an obligation to protect him for his parents, but helped him nonetheless, acting as tech and tactics out of love for his adopted son. He refused to take proper control of Wayne Enterprises, leaving Alfred to run communications in 2019 while he donned a bat-like suit of armor to prowl the streets of Gotham, fighting crime as the vigilante "The Batman". Before he could, though, Thomas and Martha were gunned down in an ally in front of Bruce, leaving Alfred to feel responsible for being unable to protect them.Ī traumatized Bruce was placed in Alfred's care, and Alfred, unsure of how to care for a child, taught him various fighting techniques to defend himself, but it made him angrier and more closed off than ever, causing him to grow into a quiet, bitter adult. Falcone had a reporter killed, and Thomas, believing he had gone too far, decided to go to the police. Thomas was a kind but imperfect man, and when news about Martha's history of mental illness was leaked to the public in 2001, Thomas tried to cover it up by dealing with gangster Carmine Falcone, much to Alfred's dismay.
